VANCOUVER, November 10, 2006 — The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today announced $307 million in new settlement funding to provinces and territories outside Quebec. The funding will ensure services and supports are in place to give immigrants every opportunity to succeed in their new home.
“Canada's new government realized that in recent years the number of newcomers to Canada was growing rapidly, but settlement service funding was not. Our government is following through by providing this much-needed funding,” said Minister Solberg. “Now, there will be more new Canadians who can access language training, orientation, referral to community resources, employment-related services, interpretation and translation.”
Minister Solberg made the announcement with British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell at SUCCESS, a major immigrant-serving agency. They were joined by partners from settlement organizations and newcomers who were able to benefit from programs such as community orientation and language training.
“Immigration is an integral part of British Columbia’s Pacific Leadership Agenda and we want to ensure that newcomers who come to our country through Canada’s Pacific Gateway can access the opportunities and support they need,” said Premier Campbell. “This demonstrates our continued commitment to work with all levels of government to ensure the needs of immigrants are met and I commend Minister Solberg and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.”
The funding includes $230 million for Ontario, in accordance with the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement, and $77 million for all other provinces and territories except Quebec, which is covered by a separate agreement. Over $138 million will be provided to British Columbia over the next two years, including $38 million from Budget 2006.
Canada’s new government is making important investments to ensure the long-term success of newcomers to Canada, including an $18 million investment allocated in budget 2006 to establish an agency for the assessment and recognition of foreign credentials.
