Gibt es in Toronto ein Viertel vergleichbar mit Berlins Prenzlauer Berg oder Friedrichshain, oder Hamburgs Schanzenviertel?
Also relativ niedrige Mieten und Preise, viele Studenten und junge Leute, hohe Dichte an Restaurants, Bars, Clubs, usw?

ja, das gibts auch in toronto. die jungs und maedels sind allerdings derzeitig alle in vancouver zur olympiade...

Nein, ich suche nicht das Viertel, wo sich Linksradikale und Drogensüchtige die Klinke in die Hand geben (mal davon abgesehen, dass das nicht auf die von mir genannten Viertel zutrifft), sondern einfach einen Ort, wo (kulturell und kulinarisch) viel los ist. Aber wo eben auch Leute mit nicht so ganz hohem Einkommen, wie Studenten oder dann in meinem Fall Work&Travel'ler, wohnen und leben können, also die Mieten nicht astronomisch sind und die Pizza nicht 20 Euro kostet (wie an Touristenhotspots). Halt einfach das Studenten- bzw. Szene-Viertel.
Vielleicht gibt es sowas in Toronto ja auch gar nicht und die von mir beschriebene Klientel wohnt in den Vorstädten und fährt für Kultur und Nachtleben in die Innenstadt. Deswegen frage ich ja, weil ich nicht weiß, ob sich alles einfach in Downtown abspielt oder eben auch etwas dezentral (wie in Berlin).

Das wäre dann in Hamburg aber eher Eimsbüttel und eher nicht das Schanzenviertel, da fand die letzte Straßenschlacht erst Juli 2009 statt...
Und ja, ich weiß, daß es fließende Übergänge gibt und man Eimsbüttel und Schanzenviertel nicht so dolle trennen kann. Aber wenn dann Eimsbüttel so rund um die Uni, als Sternschanze, Sternschanzenpark und Hafenstraße... *klugscheiß*

Ja gut, ich war nie am 1. Mai in Hamburg. War drei mal mit Freunden in Hamburg und hab das Schanzenviertel da trotz Roter Flora als ganz coole Ecke zum Weggehen kennen gelernt. Habe es eigentlich nur dazu genommen, um auch evtl. Exil-Hamburger anzusprechen, ging aber anscheinend nach hinten los. Dann beschränke ich meine Frage eben auf den Thread-Titel.

ja, schanze ohne kiffer ist wohl wie frankfurt ohne banker...
anyway, schau mal hier:
suedlich (und einschliesslich) bloor street und ab/bis oestlich bathurst bzw. spadina - quasi rund um UofT.

Ein Kreuzberg oder Marzahn wirst du vermutlich auch in CA finden, selbst die Elbchaussee könnte da sein. Frag die Eingeborenen (Kanadier) lieber nach den Wohngegenden. Die kennen das alles viel besser und können Tips geben.

I can read and speak German, but writing - well, let's just say it's rusty. So, English it is, if that's ok with you.

Toronto is a city of neighbourhoods. There's downtown, from Lake Ontario to Bloor. There's midtown, from St.Clair to the 401. And then there's uptown, north of the 401. We live, and have always lived, close to downtown in the West End. The neighbourhoods that best match your requirements are Queen West, Brockton Village and Parkdale. Queen West starts at Bathhurst and is well known for restaurants, galleries and nightlife.

Parkdale used to be one of Toronto's most desirable neighbourhoods, until the 1950's. Then the Gardiner, a highway, was built along the lakeshore and the old mansions fell into disrepair and many were turned into rooming houses. Recently, people have started buying these old buildings and many are now renovated and are, once again, family homes. Our house is one of these. Still, Parkdale is a very mixed neighbourhood. Rich and poor live in close proximity and it is first home for many immigrants to Canada.

Brockton Village is also known as Little Portugal. This neighbourhood is changing rapidly, with old Portugese families selling the houses they lived in all their lives and a younger crowd moving in. Many of the newcomers are gay, and there are many new bars and restaurants opening.

Finally, keep in mind that Toronto is like no city you will find in Germany* - except perhaps a little bit like Berlin. Toronto is a city of immigrants. We are a mixture of a people, from all over the world, mixing food, music and culture. You have to be open minded, you have got to be open tom new ideas and experiences to be happy here. *in my personal experience. I lived in Duesseldorf and Hamburg during my time in Germany.

Aber sicher, sehr gute Auswahl. Hoher ''cool factor''. Etwas "gritty" noch in Teilen, aber sonst okay. Wir wohnen mitten drin - Queen & Spadina, und fühlen uns ganz wohl. Abstriche muß man überall machen. Dazu dann noch Ossington - läuft nord von QW.
QW wird aber langsam teuer.

Billiger als QW, schau mal Queen East - mehr junge Familien, aber die selben alten Häuser (leider auch teuer und brauchen sehr viele $$ um saniert zu werden (für Europäische Ansprüche ). Aber dies trifft fast für alle "cool'' parts of town zu, und auch auf Montreal, Calgary und besonders Vancouver.
Condos genug, Queen Ost und West, preislich $400 - 500 pro Quadratfuß, billiger etwas weg von dieser ost-west Achse. Gegen Zentrum - University bis Church gehen die Preise dann schon mal durch's Dach: $500 - 800 pro Quadratfuß. Und 650 Quadratfuß sind dann ein ''one bedroom''
Danforth - schon etwas gemäßigter, wenn auch da einige ''pockets'' mit hohen Preisen zu finden sind. Cool-factor: Yes!

YYZ is right about Queen East. Leslieville is full of coffee and antique shops. So many young families live in Leslieville that it's also become known as Babyville. The east does suffer from termites, but as you'll be renting, I assume, that shouldn't be your problem.

Another neighbourhood you might enjoy is the old German/Polish neighbourhood, Roncesvalles. Roncies is home to beautiful old homes and is bordered by High Park to the west, great for sports in both summer and winter. Roncesvalles Avenue itself is home to a mixture of fantastic old Polish delis and trendy newcomers. Houses are expensive to buy, but you can still find affordable rental accommodation. We lived there for a while, before we purchased our first home, and loved it. Local pubs, a great local cinema, restaurants and very friendly and welcoming. If you do decide to make Roncies your home, make sure to visit The Inter Steer, of the best bars in the neighbourhood.

Then there's always The Annex, north and south of Bloor, west of Spadina. Beautiful streets and houses, home to many students from the University of Toronto. That particular stretch of Bloor is little Korea, great restaurants and stores.

As a final remark, while YYZ is of course right about property prices, for renters there's much less of a fluctuation. A basement apartment in somebody's house will typically set you back between $700 and $950. Rent for a one bedroom apartment is about $1200 and a two bedroom will be about $1500, give or take. A luxury condo will of course be more expensive than an apartment in a house, but these are typical numbers. Often all utilities like hydro, gas and water are included in the rental price, excluding cable and the phone.
