"Fall is the time of year when bears enter "hyperphagia", a period of excessive eating to build a layer of fat to sustain them through their winter hibernation. Pregnant sows can consume up to 25,000 calories a day. While the bears can obtain these calorie quotas from natural sources such as berries & salmon, they will be attracted to high calorie non-natural foods including garbage, pet-food, birdseed etc...."
Ron Steinbach got a little more than he expected on Friday when he stumbled on a large shark in the Alberni Inlet.
The shark, which was close to 14 feet long, was on beach by the Boy Scout Camp, close to Coulson's Mill site, down the Alberni Inlet. He found it and brought it over to the APD site across the bay.
