Also unsere Tageshöchsttemperatur lag heute bei -22°C, ist aber im Laufe des Tages auf -30°C abgefallen...

Endlich richtige Jahreszeiten anstatt dieses Schmuddelwetter in D. Schnee zu Weihnachten passt besser als Nieselregen wie ich finde. Diese Nacht sollen es -22 C werden. Rekord fuer dieses Datum.

Ich war noch niemals in New York, ich war noch niemals auf
Hawaii....


Winter in Kanada bzw. auf Vancouver Island!

Ich werde auf jeden Fall (wie gewünscht) eine Schneeschaufel
mitnehmen. Den schönsten Aufenthalt, den ich in Kanada hatte,
war die Weihnachtszeit (Winter 2008/2009) in Vancouver und
auf Vancouver Island. Ein Jahrhundertwinter. Wir wollten
gerade von Saltspring Island nach Crofton rüber schippern
und der Schneesturm begann. Tochter saß fest auf
Pender Island an Neujahr und am Heiligabend ging garnichts
mehr in Vancouver, Skytrain fuhr nicht mehr und kaum
noch ein Flieger. Muss das jetzt noch getoppt werden? Ich bleibe (noch) gelassen. Vorfreude ist groß.

Bekam vor zwei Tagen aus V.I. von einer Freundin, die in
Dawson Creek und Calgary aufgewachsen ist, diese
beruhigende Erklärung, alles nicht ganz so wild (im Moment)
auf der Insel:

I used to laugh and still in Calgary it is a big joke these island people who have maybe only minus 5 and one day of snow and they are helpless to get out.

In all my years of education in Calgary not once did we get a day off because snow. It would be rediculous, it is winter and there is going to be snow.

But I would not like to see a busy fast paced Calgarian try to drive this snow. In Calgary it is rare to become stuck in snow. It snows each day but not wet enough to make a snowman or other fun things the kids do here.

But in the middle of a minus 40 day in Calgary the snow has traction and lots of it because it is dry.

Then there will be a shannook and this is maybe one or two or even three days of warm spring weather. The snow begins to melt and then the chinook is gone and the whole world outside was one sheet of very slippery ice but would freeze so hard that still there was some traction

and the tiny snow flakes produced by dry air conditions would cover this ice too but I do not recall anyone including my parents being stuck on that ice.

The Schools were all built up on hills there so if you are at a school ground the whole hill of ice was smooth and slick and fast and we would go at night out in the freezing air (but we could dress warm enough because the frozen air was dry not wet as it is here,)

and we would take the crazy carpets or sleds or other things we had and sail down that hill at a neck breaking speed and have to slow ourselves down at the end not to crash into the wire fence at the end of the acre of property because we could go very far with this slippery sheet of ice.

We would love this kind of an evening.

So it is O.K. for Calgary but the people who have been in a larger snowfall here know it is different snow entirely. In Calgary snow is usual and here it quickly becomes big news.

So many accidents and busses not running.

In the whole history I know of Calgary this did not happen. Only on rare occasions the hail would get very bad there. In the early spring (like about May lol) you can still expect a bit more snow, the spring snow storm it is called.

But if it was warm and about to rain (did not rain often in this grassland region) there was hailstones as large as mens fists

2006 saß ich im Wickanninish Restaurant / Hotel bei Tofino auf der
Terrasse und las auf einem Flyer: "Tell me the drama
of a winterstorm on Vancouver Island". Das erlebte ich dann 2008.

Werde jetzt ein Paar dicke Socken mehr einpacken, man weiß
ja nie, was kommt. Winter halt. Hoffe, dass ich alles richtig
machen werden.

Brrrrrr Saskatchewan brrrrr

Heute Abend war im Wilden Süden hier Sturmwarnung. Hab mir einen kleinen aquamarinblauen
superleichten Handgepäckkoffer gekauft mit vier Formel 1 Rollen dran, die Vettel-schnell sind und der neue Reisebegleiter fiel dauernd um vom Wind. Die Frisur hält, der Koffer auch.

In Good Old Europe erfrieren nur die Krokodile, ansonsten ist es Frühling hier. Gestern
gab es ein spätes Frühstück auf dem Balkon. Also alles halb so wild wettermäßig.
