Language barrier played role in fatal Fort St. John shooting, jury finds FORT ST. JOHN, B.C.— The Canadian Press Published Friday, Sep. 02, 2011 1:02PM EDT
Mr. George's son-in-law, Jacob Rempel Jr., says not enough was done to try to communicate with the victim, saying George would have responded better to a family member or friend.
“I think, personally, it would really help to get a close family friend or family member in there to try and talk to him, he said.
However, lead investigator Sgt. Dave Chauhan testified it would have been too dangerous to send anyone on to the property.
Several witnesses testified that months before his death, Mr. George, who had a wife and 11 children, appeared to be depressed and possibly suffering from a mental illness.
Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, Senior Media Relations Officer for the RCMP in northern B.C. says analysts will study the findings of the inquest jury.

The onus is not on the police to speak every possible language. The man approached with a rifle, a language that is very clear for all. He was shot to death, as was proper.

Ottawa, June 4, 2010 – On September 26, 2009, the Fort St. John RCMP responded to a report of a man having allegedly forced a van containing his family off the road as it departed the family's residence. The group was able to drive away and seek refuge in a nearby residence. The Fort St. John RCMP eventually located the man at his residence, secured the area and undertook exhaustive efforts to communicate with the man via interpreters and a crisis negotiator over a period of several days.
In order to minimize further risk to the public and responding members, the RCMP North District Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed.
On September 30, 2009, the suspect, later identified as Valeri George, was seen exiting his residence and getting into a vehicle armed with a rifle. As Mr. George drove the vehicle down the drive towards the ERT members, the police engaged the vehicle utilizing lethal force and the suspect was shot. Emergency medical attention was provided almost immediately but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
