In einem anderen Vorfall wurde ein Cougar in Goldstream Park diesen Samstagabend gesichtet.

In der Gegend Nähe des Alberni Highways und Island Highways gibt es doch eine gut bestückte Anzahl von Cougars, bisher wurde dort aber niemand wurde verletzt.

Im Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis höre ich immer öfters seit letztem Jahr von Cougars,
die man sieht. Meinem kanadischen Freund wurde auf Campgrounds im Norden der Insel gesagt, dass er sich andere Campground suchen soll, weil Cougars in den Campgrounds gesichtet wurden. Er hatte auch schon Begegnungen mit Cougars in verschiedenen Gegenden, wo er lebte und arbeitete. In den Gebieten, in denen Cougars
leben, stellt man sich eigentlich darauf ein, soweit es möglich ist.
Habe bisher niemanden kennengelernt, der wirkich wünschte, dass
Cougars, Bären oder Wölfe erschossen werden sollten.

Dem 18 Monate alten Kleinkind, dass am Montag beim Kennedy Lake
beim Pacific Rim National Park, Nähe Ucluelet um 18 h von einem Cougar angegriffen wurde, geht es zum Glück jetzt besser.

Wie schon im anderen Beiträgen von mir berichtet, gab es ja dieses
Jahr einige Cougarvorfälle auf Vancouver Island wie in Nanaimo (5. Juli) und Sidney (8. Juli, gerade in der Zeit, als ich dort war). Auch die Bären waren sehr aktiv.

NANAIMO - Police have issued a warning after a young woman was stalked by a cougar on Vancouver Island on Monday night.
 
The unidentified woman was riding her bike at about 7:20 p.m. near Mountainview Elementary School in the 2500-block of East Wellington in Nanaimo when the cougar crouched low and circled her.
 
Nanaimo RCMP said the woman dismounted her bike and confronted the cougar, which ran into the bushes.
 
“The young lady did the right thing by confronting the cougar," said conservation officer Steve Ackles. "Never turn and run when a cougar is coming at you low to the ground as the cougar may strike.”
 
Police officers and a conservation officer searched for the cougar without success.
 

Am 1. August näherte sich ein Cougar einem Jogger in der Nähe
von Ucluelet und eine Woche später ca. wurde dort auch ein
Cougar erschossen.

Seit Mitte August gibt es in der Region von Ucluelet eine Wolf- und Cougarberatung wegen erhöhter Aktivitäten dieser Raubtiere.
Man sieht ja (mit Respekt vor den Tieren) an jeder Ecke die Warnschilder.

Erinnere mich noch, als ich 2006 in Kanada war und überall auf der ersten Seite der
kanadischen Zeitungen Bruno der (deutsche) Bär zu sehen war gleich neben dem Papst. Ich glaube, Bruno JJ1 kam aus Südtirol damals.

Sommerloch ist gut moeglich, aber wenn der Kopf eines 18 Monate alten Baby im Maul eines Cougars steckt, dann sollte man schon auf seine Kinder, Haustiere usw gut aufpassen und vorsichtig sein. Zur Jagd-Saison gibt es ja immer wieder Berichte ueber erschossene Hunters.
Sind auch oft einige aus D dabei, die hier gerne in ihrer Jaegeruniform rumlaufen. Vor Baeren, Cougars usw habe ich einen grossen Respekt. Einen Wolf (sicher Mischung) hatte ich auch mal bei mir einen Winter wohnen.
Noch habe ich nichts weiter in den Nachrichten ueber Cougars gehoert. Waere schoen, wenn der vom Kennedy Lake in der Wildnis untertaucht und nicht erschossen wird.

Man hat das Gefühl, als würde man den selben Cougar-Witz 20 (oder noch öfter) mal hintereinander lesen und hören (nicht nur hier, immer wieder grüßt das Cougar-Murmeltier), wobei sich jedesmal nur die Personen ändern, die dieselben uralten Cougar-Anmerkungen machen.
Irgendeiner findet sich bestimmt, der sich darüber noch schlapp lacht.

Ich habe schon lange nichts mehr über Cougars (auf Vancouver Island) berichtet.

Gestern (20.09.2011) munkelte man, dass in der Nähe einer Elementary School in Port Alberni ein
Cougar getötet wurde. Auf Bestätigung wird noch gewartet.

Cougar-human conflict on par with other years
 
 
 
VICTORIA – Although this appears to be a busy year for cougar-human conflict, in fact, it is not unusual when compared to other years.
 
 
 
Between April 1 and Sept. 7, 2011 – the busiest time of year for cougar sightings – the Ministry of Environment received 1,362 complaints about cougars. By comparison, the ministry received:
 
 
 
·         1,854 complaints in the fiscal year 2010-11.
 
·         2,242 complaints in 2009-10.
 
·         1,792 in 2008-09.
 
 
 
To date, 43 cougars have been killed in 2011 – 27 by conservation officers (COS) and 16 by others such as the RCMP or members of the public. During a similar period (April 1 – Sept. 30) in 2010, 49 were killed – 34 by COS and 15 by others, and in 2009, 68 were killed – 40 by COS, 28 by others.
 
 
 
Action by COS, where warranted, immediately follows confirmation of a cougar conflict wherever possible. A cougar is destroyed when it acts unusually aggressive toward humans and poses a risk to public safety.
 
 
 
Although a cougar attack is highly unlikely, it always pays to be prepared. Information and awareness are your best defences:
 
 
 
·         Don’t feed wildlife and avoid attracting prey species such as small mammals, raccoons, deer, etc. by properly managing garbage and other attractants.
 
·         Hike in groups, not alone.
 
·         Carry bear spray.
 
·         Ensure children do not play in wooded areas or hike on trails alone.
 
·         Keep dogs on leashes, and smaller pets and livestock within enclosed areas.
 
·         If you encounter a cougar, stay calm and pick up small children and household pets.
 
·         Never run from or turn your back on a cougar.
 
·         Always give the cougar room to escape.
 
·         Face the cougar and raise your arms to look bigger.
 
·         If a cougar acts aggressively, speak loudly and firmly, and if possible, throw rocks.
 
·         If a cougar attacks, fight back.
 
 
 
 
 
The public is asked to report sightings of cougars and other dangerous wildlife to the 24-hour hotline at 1 877 952-7277.

Cougar prowling around Alberni in wee hours


I don’t know how else to inform the town of Port Alberni about the cougar sightings I have witnessed in the last few days.

Thursday at 7 a.m. I saw the first cougar across the street from 5400 Highland Dr.

This morning at 5 a.m. I saw another cougar (much smaller than the first one). This cougar crept up the creek by the house I reside at, making it onto this property right by my car. Once it was by my car it sat down.

..... I had seen one two days before; I dragged him to the window to witness it also.

This cougar then walked up the front yard and back into the creek beside this house. This area is full of children and somewhat close to AW Neill School....

PORT ALBERNI, B.C. — A resident of this Vancouver Island town rammed a cougar with his car after he saw it attacking a neighbourhood cat.

A cougar has been lurking around a residential neighbourhood in Port Alberni and a few people have claimed it has stalked them.

The cougar has since been killed by conservation officers.

On Tuesday afternoon, resident Bob Cole was pulling out of his driveway, en route to a round of golf.

Not far from his home, he could see a cougar on top of one of his neighbour's cats. In a split decision, he hit the gas, aimed for the cougar and hoped the best for the little cat's life.

The cougar, it turns out, was ill. After conservation authorities located the injured cougar, it was destroyed and sent away for an autopsy.

"It's been in the neighbourhood for a while, and people have been warned about it," Cole said, adding that the large cat was stalking a woman and her dog just last week. "I just took my chance to hit the cougar.

"When the conservation officers came, they found it immediately. It went down off the side of the road and they dispatched it."

"The cougar was a young male and it was not in healthy condition," RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

The cat escaped safely.

Es wurden in den letzten Tagen weitere Cougars gesichtet "lots of cougars around lately" rund um Port Alberni, Ucluelet und Tofino. Eines am Strand bei einer Klippe in Ucluelet, das
wahrscheinlich dasselbe Cougar war, das man zuvor schon mehrmals beim Black Rock Resort
gesichtet hatte. Ein anderes Cougar wurde in Tofino gesehen und gestern morgen eines
in Ucluelet und eines am Sproat Lake.

Als wir im Juli bei diesen Orten waren, fiel nur knapp vor unserem Auto ein riesiger Brocken
Stein vom Felsen runter. Mein Beifahrer war geistesgegenwärtig und machte ein Foto davon am
Angel Rock. Manchmal kann diese Gegend gefährlich sein. Davor warnte mich schon ein
Deutscher vor vielen Jahren, der in Nanaimo ein mexikanisches Bootsrestaurant führte mit
einem Österreicher.

Ganz ungefährlich war es dieses Jahr wieder nicht für mich, aber wie so oft, bin ich wohlbehalten
heim gekommen. Könnte eigentlich sofort wieder losfliegen. Mal sehen.

Provincial conservation authorities with the help of local police shot and killed a cougar in Ucluelet September 21 - the second cat to be destroyed in the area in less than a week.

The animal was tracked in the bushes behind the high school and elementary school area, according to Ucluelet RCMP Sgt. Jeff Swann, and weighed about 63 to 68 kg (140 to 150 lbs).

A young female cougar was destroyed over the weekend after exhibiting stalking behaviour toward several adults.

"We looked up into the rock cliffs, and about 50 feet [15 m] up we saw a cougar," said Wong.

He said the cat was watching the group and came down to within nine metres, but stayed on the rocks.

"He would've been cougar bait, that's his new nickname," said Wong.

Wong called RCMP who then notified provincial conservation officers.

Parks Canada, in partnership with the Province of BC and the Tofino RCMP, destroyed a young female cougar at a nearby property at approximately 5: 30 p.m. that day.

Dave McVetty, superintendent for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (PRNPR), said it is "highly unlikely" that cougar, which was estimated to be under one-year old, was the same cat that attacked an 18month-old boy at the park's Kennedy Lake day-use area on August 29.

Ich erinnere mich gerade, wie wir vor Jahren zu zweit Ende September / Anfang Oktober
in dieser Gegend alleine durch den Wald zum Pazifikstrand liefen. Das einzige Fahrzeug weit und
breit auf dem riesigen Parkplatz, was öfters so war. Überall die Warnschilder für Cougars
und Bären und Wölfe und kein Mensch weit und breit, so unser Eindruck. Ich hatte kein
Pfefferspray dabei und suchte mir einen großen Stock und habe laut im Wald gesungen.
Es gab auch eine Toilette mitten im Wald - ohne Türen -, recht sauber und davor die
Warnschilder. Man sah vereinzelt frische Spuren von Bären. Meine Begleitung zeigte sie mir.
So wunderschön die Gegend auch ist, hatte ich immer ein merkwürdiges Gefühl, wenn wir
alleine in den Wäldern waren. Vor allem im Winter. Erst kürzlich hatte ich wieder mehrmals
dieses Gefühl im Roberts Memorial Provincial Park bei Cedar. Ich war noch nie in einem Waldgebiet, das so still war wie dort, ein Phänomen. Gerade in dieser Zeit gab es
Cougarvorfälle in der Nähe und wir wunderten uns, das wir in diesem Waldstück kein Tier sahen und ganz selten mal einen Vogel zwitschern hörten. Diese Stimmung hat sich bei mir so eingeprägt.

Ich war froh, wenn uns mal Menschen entgegenkamen im Roberts Memorial Provincial Park, obwohl wir am selben Tag kurz darauf auf der anderen Seite bei den 5 Nanaimo Lakes in eine wilde Verfolgungsjagd der RCMP reingeraten sind (am Sonntagabend zuvor gab es zwei
bewaffnete Raubüberfälle und einen Täter hatte man dort in der Gegend
im Visier).

Auch eine recht verlassenen Gegend, die ich anders vom Winter in Erinnerung hatte, als die Gatter für uns zu den Holzfällercamps ausnahmsweise aufgemacht wurden und man bis 5 pm sich dort aufhalten durfte. Ab und zu begegnete man dort mal einem
freundlich grüßenden bärtigen Kanadier (war es womöglich ein Einwanderer?) auf dem Quad oder mit uralten Trucks mit typischer karierter Jacke.

Dieses Bild am See würde auf einen typischen Kanada-Prospekt passen. Mir tat nur unser Auto leid, als wir über die riesigen Schlaglöcher fuhren zum nächsten See. Es hat nicht geregnet.

Frische Bärenspuren am Baum entdeckten wir hinterm Haus meines Begleiters im Winter. Von wegen Winterschlaf! An Cougars habe ich da garnicht gedacht.

Ich lese jetzt erst Deinen Beitrag.

Die Bewohner von Vancouver Island, mit denen ich u. a. über Cougars
gesprochen habe, sehen es wie ich, dass dort ein Cougar-Gebiet ist bzw.
Bären und Wölfe u.a. Tiere leben. Keinen einzigen habe ich gesprochen, der
nach einem sog. Cougar-Vorfall die Cougars beseitigen wollte. Im Gegenteil,
sie waren meist entrüstet darüber, wie man nach einem Cougar-Vorfall
dann auf die Jagd ging.

Dass darüber gesprochen wird und reagiert wird, vor allem über die
Tötung von Cougars, das kann ich nachvollziehen.

Ich erinnere an das Jahr 2006, da war in den kanadischen Medien / Zeitungen
der deutsch-italienische Bär Bruno, der leider getötet wurde, auf Seite
eins neben dem deutschen Papst. Erklären konnte ich mir das nicht, weil
es gibt doch so viele Bären in Nordamerika, dass man trotzdem ausführlich
über Bruno JJ1 berichtete. Er war auch in Kanada ein Medienstar.
