As many as 6,000 dead birds have washed up on the shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario, say authorities, who believe botulism may be to blame.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Peter Leon said the number of dead waterfowl is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000. Officials will be collecting more of the carcasses on Sunday for examination.

The dead birds are scattered along a nearly three-kilometre stretch north of the community of Wasaga Beach, said Leon.

Federal and provincial officials believe the cause of the death is a form of botulism, apparently from the birds eating dead fish, he said.

After researching via various news and media outlets I have found that mallards and pintail ducks were included amongst the dead birds. The explanation of botulism poisoning from eating dead fish may be viable if they were all mergansers, gulls, and loons but becomes immediately suspect when the dead include species that do not eat fish and any ministry expert would know that. Something smells here more than the stench from the dead birds and fish.

Bewusstsein für die Umwelt muss man erst einmal entwickeln. Das ist schwer, wenn man jeden Apfel in einer extra Plastiktüte verpackt bekommt, die man anschließen zusammen mit dem anderen Hausmüll, der alten Dachpappe, alten Matratzen und sonstigem Unrat im Garten verbrennt, entfacht von einem kräftigen Schluck Heizöl. Anfang hielt ich es nur für eine riesen Schweinerei basierend auf Faulheit, die Abfälle ordnungsgemäß zu entsorgen, bis mir klar wurde, dass man sich des Problems nicht ansatzweise bewusst war, als man an den rauchenden Trümmern fröhlich mit den Kindern Marshmallows röstete.
Da wollte ich dann noch nicht länger wortlos zusehen und frage, ob man eigentlich wüsste welche Mengen von Giften da freigesetzt würde?
Als Antwort bekam ich ein sorgloses: "Das machen wir immer so, ist noch nie jemandem was passiert. " von einer Frau die zu diesem Zeitpunkt die 6 Krebs-Op hinter sich hatte und sich weigerte die Eier von St.Jacobs zu kaufen, weil da ja manchmal noch "Puh" von den Hühnern dran klebe.
2 Tage spätere war ich zum fischen mit einem anderen Kanadier auf einem Boot auf dem Lake Ontario unterwegs und selbiger wollte mir beweisen wie gut die Wasserqualität im See ist. So schöpfte er ein grosses Glass voll und trank es aus was sein Junior prompt nachmachte.
4 Stunden später haben sie um die Wette gereiert. ... ins Wasser natürlich...

Avian Botulism


"Avian botulism is a paralytic disease caused by ingestion of a toxin produced by the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria is widespread in soil and requires warm temperatures, a protein source and an anaerobic (no oxygen) environment in order to become active and produce toxin. Decomposing vegetation and invertebrates combined with warm temperatures can provide ideal conditions for the botulism bacteria to activate and produce toxin. There are several types of toxin produced by strains of this bacteria; birds are most commonly affected by type C and to a lesser extent type E."

"Birds either ingest the toxin directly or may eat invertebrates (e.g. chironomids, fly larvae) containing the toxin. Invertebrates are not affected by the toxin and store it in their body. A cycle develops in a botulism outbreak when fly larvae (maggots), feed on animal carcasses and ingest toxin. Ducks that consume toxin-laden maggots can develop botulism after eating as few as 3 or 4 maggots."
