Canada ranks 7th as tourist destination: report

TORONTO — Canada ranks seventh in a new study of world travel and tourism destinations released Thursday, but could do a better job putting out the welcome mat for tourists.

Canada tied with Singapore and Luxembourg in the international survey of 124 countries listed in the Geneva-based World Economic Forum's first ever Travel &Tourism Competitiveness Report.

Switzerland heads the list, followed by Austria, Germany, Iceland, the United States and Hong Kong.

But a major weakness would be “price competitiveness,” she said.

“When it comes to the cost of living in the country, Canada scores really bad — 120th out of 124 countries — very expensive,” said Ms. Mia.

Natuerlich haben viele kanadische Medien den 7. Platz aufgegriffen und entsprechend publiziert. Das ist doch wieder Balsam fuer die kanadische Seele. Allerdings nutzt uns Touristikern diese Statistik nicht viel, weil da so viele Kriterien mit bewertet wurden, die moeglicherweise fuer eine wissentschaftliche Abrundung des Themas von Bedeutung sind, aber nicht fuer die Tourismusindustrie - oder allenfalls zum Lerneffekt, wo man noch etwas verbessern koennte.

Viel wichtiger fuer die Leute, die vom Tourismus leben, ist natuerlich die Tatsache, wieviele Touristen kommen den ueberhaupt ins Land (bzw. wieviele Touristen aus dem eigenen Land machen im eigenen Land Urlaub), und wieviel Geld lassen sie da.

Nach den jaehrlichen Erhebungen der World Tourism Organisation mit Sitz in Madrid war Kanada auch in dieser Rangliste vor etwa 10 Jahren mal auf dem 7. Platz, ist aber inzwischen auf den 11. Rang abgefallen. Und bei der Statistik, in welchem Land die Urlauber das meiste Geld lassen, lag Kanada immer schon weiter zurueck. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_Rankings)
