Thursday, October 11, 2007 Question: People in Ontario are getting an extra holiday after re-electing the Liberals for a second straight majority. Premier Dalton McGuinty says the party will follow through on its promise to create a "family day" on the third Monday in February, starting next year. Should B.C. follow suit? Why or why not? Some of our responses:
I believe that these kinds of holidays just interrupt services to the public from our govts and key vendors. Since I am self-employed I largely ignore public holidays. But I believe that there is something to celebrated every day. Maybe we should consider taking an hour off to think about what we are doing and not doing with our families. Is it enough and could we do more? Taking time off for a collective think is more useful than just one more 3 day weekend!

Alberta has long had a Family Day and worked hard ensuring there are family-friendly activities during this time. Without commitment and leadership in creating family-friendly events/activities, I think it would be another government waste of time and money. Having said that, I would strongly encourage a public/private sponsored family activity day. Larry Carter
Quite frankly if Gordon Campbell gets in again I think we will need a day of mourning! I cannot stand the man and there is no way I would ever want to celebrate Campbell getting in again. Sue Cook Yes, because it is a long time between New Year's to Good Friday, depending on where Good Friday falls in its lunar cycle. Some people receive vacation pay and are reluctant to pay for their time off, so statutory holidays are a wonderful break for them. Lorraine Beckett
I think that the B.C. government should at least consider having a stat holiday in mid February as the Ontario Premier has announced. The winters are long and it would give workers a lift of energy. It could be tied into school break perhaps so that parents who are unable to take that break time off would at least have a long weekend with their children Then perhaps school districts would all take the same break dates which would also be an asset for families to get together. Donalda Carson Who can say no to another holiday? Of course, if a February holiday is created for Ontario, given the huge dominance of corporations and government services situated in that province, the other provinces will follow suit. The fallout will be predictable. Investors will simply conclude it is too expensive to operate here.
R.J. Angus I am the wrong guy to ask since, being long since retired, every day is a holiday so I would not be affected. I would have some concern about the economic effect and loss of productivity in the province but it is a long haul from Christmas to Easter and a day off might well have a salutary result. My own company used to give an annual 'floating day off' to all employees which was very welcome. Why not? For poor reasons I would go for it but not to help some party to win an election. Sounds as if it was a bribe for Ontarians. Roy Ellwood Celebrating family with a holiday in February is a terrific way to break up the winter blues providing its inclusive and some are not considered more family then others by some religious zealots. If a family theme is not welcome, some sort of holiday in February is the right direction for the B.C. government to go. Duane Burnett Never heard such a ridiculous suggestion. National holidays are always a popular idea, but to give a national holiday just for electing a certain party is bribery of the ignorant masses. If every party resorted to this kind of dispicable behavior we would eventually have no working days. Donald Chivers A resounding no! Another holiday would be very nice but that is all! To add another day's work loss would be bad for the economy, and when it comes down to it is just another silly idea! Forget it! Janet Dysart What a brilliant idea - yet another nonsense holiday. Families will go to the malls and buy useless stuff that will then, in turn, fill up the yard sales of the August long weekend. With a stroke of the pen, the economy is stimulated and everybody thinks they're getting something. W.D. Fyfe B.C. should follow Ontario's lead by creating a new statutory holiday called Family Day. A new stat holiday will bring the total to 12 which works out to one per month. It will also provide a refreshing break during the long gap between New Year's Day and Good Friday (Easter). The concept of Family Day is a perfect idea since it applies to all Canadians, but has no religious or political connotation. Plus the extra work day at time-and-a-half will help families with people earning minimum wage.

What can you say about another day off for the workers? Yes, of course any paid time off is a good thing for the average man or woman. And dedicating it to the family makes it all the more appealing!
