Vancouver — A study on marijuana use in B.C. shows people are lighting up twice much as they did a decade ago.
The study by the Centre for Addictions Research and the Centre for Applied Research says one in six B.C. residents smoke pot.
Report co-author Benedikt Fischer said most use is occasional, with a minority of users being daily, or binge smokers.
He said in some parts of the province pot is more prevalent that alcohol or tobacco use.
Dr. Fischer said marijuana is here to stay and lawmakers and health officials are going to have to deal with the reality. He added that they have to work to minimize the risks instead of pretending they can make the drug vanish.
The study found that 1.8 million British Columbians -- out of a total population of just over four million -- have tried marijuana at least once
