"They are dirty and carry disease and I'm afraid they'll get in the house and we'll never get them out," Vancouver resident Julie Drzymala told CTV.
One Vancouver-area exterminator says he's had more calls about rats this summer than any other summer over the last six years.
"For us, over last year, almost 12 per cent more actually," John Van of B.C. Pest Management told CTV. Other exterminators claim they've seen as much as a 50 per cent surge in business.
Van blames the current building boom in Vancouver for the recent infestation. He says new high-rise and housing developments disturb the nests rats call home, forcing them onto city streets and into parks where they are more visible and sometimes trapped.
"Over the 40 years I've been doing this, there is always an influx of rats in (construction) areas," Van said.
Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.
