Winter of discontent, and snow, made glorious by summer of babies in N.B.

Jenny Scott, who owns two baby and maternity shops in the province — one in Saint John and one in Fredericton — said she's expecting to do big business this summer despite the recession, because of what New Brunswick couples were up to late last year.
"Business is definitely booming," she said.
"It seems every third person who walks by is pregnant."
Every year in New Brunswick, the province's birthrate jumps like clockwork in July and stays up through September.
In 2008, births in the province were up 18 per cent during those three months compared to the rest of the year, the most lopsided distribution of newborns in the country for the third year in a row.
Joanne Murphy's daughter Jennifer was born during that mini-boom last September and said it was something that just happened.
"We just thought it was time for another baby," Murphy said. "So we just decided and there she was."
Pregnancy rates are fairly stable in New Brunswick through most of the year but then take off between mid-October and mid-January as the weather gets colder and the nights grow longer.
This year winter was especially tough with over a dozen major storms blowing across the province. That has baby retailers like Scott, whose own son Dexter was born last August, expecting another bumper crop this summer.
Kalie Matheson, who was in Scott's Saint John shop this week looking over the stock, said she's expecting her first child in August. Matheson said she's a little surprised to be in the market for baby gear.
