Prince Rupert warned of long welfare lineups Prince Rupert -- City council has been told welfare lineups this winter could reach epic proportions after fishermen and shore workers suffered through one of the worst fishing seasons in recent memory.
Members of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union could be forced to request welfare during the off-season because they don't have the 560 hours worked to qualify for employment insurance.
Two members of the union's social services committee called for and got support from council Monday.
Ocean Fish workers haven't worked since Aug. 7, and most Canadian Fish workers haven't worked since mid-August. CP
