LONG BEACH — The Schooner Cove parking lot will remain closed for the coming days but the public can still access the beach via Incinerator Rock.
Bob Hansen, wildlife conservation officer at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, said officials decided to close the parking lot at the end of September because two bears were becoming too habituated and were showing indifference to people.
“That raised some concerns for us,” he said. “Because of that high level of habituation we wanted to give them a break from human activity.”
Hansen said park officials initially closed the parking lot and a section of the beach for a week starting Sept. 29. He said the park then reopened the parking lot to the public but days later decided to close it again.....
